Cela faisait plusieurs mois que j’avais envie d’aller la visiter mais ça ne s’était jamais fait pour différentes raisons. Et puis un dimanche avec quelques amis, nous nous sommes rendus au 67 de l’avenue Franklin Roosevelt pour y découvrir ce bijou architectural de 3 500 m2. Ce doux mélange d’art déco et de Bauhaus, de matériaux luxueux et de sobriété des lignes.

For several months, I wanted to visit it but it had never happened for different reasons. Then, one Sunday, with some friends, we went to 67 Avenue Franklin Roosevelt to discover this architectural gem of 3500 m2. This gentle mix of art deco and Bauhaus, luxurious materials and simple lines.
J’avais été immédiatement séduite par cette photo de la villa vue de derrière, où on aperçoit cette piscine dont le turquoise avait quelque chose de provocateur et d’improbable. Elle pourrait, sans la moindre hésitation, faire partie du décor du film “Gatsby le Magnifique”.
I was immediately seduced by this picture of the villa rear view, where you can see the turquoise pool which looked provocative and unlikely. It could truly be part of the set of the film “Great Gatsby”.
Quand je suis dans un endroit tel quel, je laisse mon imagination vagabonder sur l’histoire du lieu : qui a vécu là ? Quel âge avaient-ils ? Etaient-ils heureux ou malheureux ? Que faisaient-ils dans cette maison ? Profitaient-ils de cette piscine ?
Ma mère me disait toujours : « Si les murs pouvaient parler, ils nous en raconteraient des choses ». Cette villa est loin d’avoir une histoire banale. Elle a même une histoire assez forte, une histoire d’amour et de haine au fil du temps et au gré des hommes.
When I’m in a place like it, I let my imagination wandering free about its History: who lived there? How old were they? Were they happy or unhappy? What were they doing in this house? Did they take advantage of this pool?
My mother always told me: “If walls could talk, they would tell us things.” This villa is far from a trivial story. It even has a pretty strong story, a story of love and hate over time and sandstone men.
L’histoire :
En 1930, Le Baron Louis Empain n’a que 22 ans quand il passe commande d’une villa à l’architecte Michel Polak. Salon de réception grandiose, hall d’entrée gigantesque et seulement 2 chambres… Cette villa aurait-elle été conçue uniquement pour la fête ? Est-ce la raison pour laquelle elle a été si peu habitée ?
History :
In 1930, Baron Louis Empain was only 22 years old when he commissioned the architect Michel Polak of a villa. Grand reception room, huge lobby and only 2 bedrooms … Was this villa only designed for the parties? Is this the reason why this house was never inhabited for long?
En 1937, la villa est cédée à l’Etat belge pour devenir un musée des arts décoratifs contemporains. C’est alors que les rebondissements s’enchaînent et les ennuis se succèdent.
Occupée par les allemands pendant la guerre; la Belgique essayera de la donner aux russes par la suite mais le baron mettra le holà pour non respect du contrat et la récupérera. Puis c’est la chaîne RTL qui installera ses bureaux pendant plusieurs années.
In 1937, the villa was sold to the Belgian State to become a museum of contemporary decorative arts. That’s when the twists are connected and trouble after another.
Occupied by the Germans during the war; Belgium will later try to give it to the Russian but the Baron put the kibosh for breach of contract and recover. Then, RTL will male it its offices for several years.
Dans les années 90, la villa est à l’abandon et sera tour à tour squattée et vandalisée. Tous les meubles disparaîtront pendant cette même période.
Dans les années 2000, la famille Boghossian restaurera la villa Empain. Celle-ci est alors classée. Elle héberge la fondation Boghossian, active dans l’éducation de la jeunesse arménienne et libanaise.
In the 90s, the villa is abandoned and will in turn squatted and vandalized. All furniture will disappear during the same period.
In the 2000s, the Boghossian family restore the Villa Empain. The villa will then by classed as a monument of cultural heritage. It hosts the Boghossian Foundation, active in the education of the Armenian and Lebanese youth.
Cette famille offre à la villa Empain une seconde jeunesse, une nouvelle vie qui correspond mieux aux attentes de son premier propriétaire pour notre plus grand bonheur.
This family offers the Villa Empain a second life, a new life that better matches the expectations of its first owner for our own delight, for us, the public.
